Two culinary arts student teams from Crescent Valley High School competed in the ProStart competition on March 18 in Salem. The culinary arts program is one of the school’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs, where students can complete a pathway of courses that support their career interests and life beyond high school.
For the competition, students in the management group created a restaurant concept that they had to sell to the judges. The concept included a blueprint of their restaurant, a business plan, a SWOT analysis, and marketing tactics.
For the culinary competition, students had to create and plate a three-course meal in 60 minutes. This also included designing a menu and conducting a cost analysis for their three-course meal.
ProStart is a two-year culinary arts and restaurant management program for high school students. The curriculum:
- Integrates practical skill sets
- Allows students to become familiar with restaurants and food service
- Exposes students to innovative career opportunities
- Provides tools and skills needed to become a successful industry leader
The management team came in 3rd place in the competition, and all won scholarships to culinary school!
