State and National Student Winners in Art at Crescent Valley High School
Three students from Crescent Valley High school were awarded Scholastics Art and Writing awards for their artwork.
Adam Miller
Senior Adam Miller won a regional Gold Key award, a national Silver Key award, and a scholarship for his ceramics portfolio titled “Fire and Ash.” He also won several other gold and silver regional awards for his pieces, including a Gold Key and National Heritage Scholarship Nomination for his porcelain and stoneware fountain. Adam also garnered two second-place awards in this year’s Oregon Potters Association Showcase.
When Adam is not behind a potter’s wheel, his either tending to bees, exploring the backcountry, or playing Ultimate Frisbee. After high school, he intends to continue his passion for ceramics and is getting a larger kiln to go with his wheel and a smaller electric kiln at his home studio.
Kayna Smith
Junior Kayna Smith won a regional Gold Key award for her soda-fired ceramic ocarina titled “Singing Armadillo.” Kayna’s Singing Armadillo was selected and placed second by the American Museum of Ceramic Arts in their 2022 National High School Gallery. The Singing Armadillo also won first place art scholarship in the High School Scholarship competition for the Oregon Potters Association Showcase. In addition to creating beautiful ceramic and glass art, Kayna is interested in tennis, chemistry, biology, and the field of Bio-Tech.
Ethan Chang
Junior Ethan Chang was awarded a regional Gold Key and a National Silver Key for his digital photograph titled “Alone.” His photograph titled “Lines” also earned a regional Silver Key in Scholastics. Ethan is an avid photographer and a 6-year (FRC) veteran on the CVHS Robotics Team. His other interests include tennis, glass arts, engineering, and aerospace.
