This spring, Corvallis High student Kaylee and CHS Health/PE teacher Lorin Reed were recognized by the Oregon Sources Showcase for the care, connection, and sense of belonging fostered through the CHS Sources of Strength program. Kaylee is an 11th grader this year and is one of the peer leaders for the CHS Sources of Strength class, which Lorin teaches.
Sources of Strength is a national program using evidence-based prevention strategies for suicide, bullying, violence, and substance abuse. Sources of Strength recognizes the strength of having multiple support systems available to students, including mental health, peer support, and trusted adults and mentors.
Each Sources of Strength class has an adult adviser and peer leader. Peer leaders help connect their peers to these support systems and ensure students know they are not alone in navigating challenging times. Our district’s Sources of Strength programs continue to grow at Corvallis High and Crescent Valley High as well as our alternative pathway program, College Hill.
“Sources of Strength is more than suicide prevention,” said Gigi Sims, the district’s Health & Wellness Coordinator. “It also helps to prevent violence and addiction by talking about big emotions, including anger, anxiety, and depression, and tapping into multiple strengths from the wheel to build resilience.”
