Today, the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) released results from the Oregon Statewide Assessment System’s (OSAS) spring 2024 assessment. These results show that our students continue to outperform state averages.
The state summative tests include English Language Arts, Math, and Science. Students in grades 3-8 plus 11 participate in English language arts and math tests, and science assessments are given in grades 5, 8, and 11. The Oregon Department of Education Student Assessment webpage provides more information on the summative tests.
In addition to data from the STAR Reading and Math Assessment, OSAS results help our district identify differences in student group outcomes and inform education planning and decision-making to prioritize funds, resources, and support for our students.
“This data demonstrates that our investments in literacy instruction and after-school and summer programs continue to provide opportunities for our students to grow academically,” said Superintendent Ryan Noss. “It is incredible to observe our staff across the district making a difference in the lives of our students every day.
According to the Oregon Department of Education, statewide results highlight that more work remains to reach pre-pandemic academic performance levels. ODE has identified key areas for targeted action to support improved student performance, including continued and increased investment in K-12 literacy, support for summer and afterschool learning, refining data and policy practices, and developing an accountability framework. The Corvallis School District participates in a program focusing on literacy and two programs that address after-school and summer learning and extended academics.
Early Literacy Grant
The Corvallis School District is one of Oregon’s Early Literacy Success School District Grant recipients. For the next two years, our district will receive funding to boost and enhance our ability to deliver high-quality literacy instruction and interventions. Through this grant, our students will grow their literacy skills and become stronger readers and writers. This can lead to many benefits, including an increased sense of belonging, improved attendance, and increased graduation rates.
Summer Programs
The Corvallis School District provides summer programming for students K-12, focused on students who are significantly behind in credits or still recovering from learning loss. In the summer of 2024, our district served over 600 students; over 96 credits were earned in High School credit recovery.
Our students who attended the summer program shared that they felt more prepared for the 2024-25 school year because they built relationships with staff and had opportunities for positive educational experiences. Because of the Corvallis Public Schools Foundation’s support, we created more opportunities to help our students regain learning.
21st Century Grant
Corvallis School District is one of twenty-seven 21st Century Grant recipients in Oregon. For the next four years, our district has funding to focus on students who need academic support in reading and math in our Title 1 schools. Students will participate over a span of 12 weeks, receiving both academic and social-emotional supports. This funding also allows us to continue the program over the summer.
