Planning for the 2020-21 School Year Update

The Corvallis School District is committed to racial equity, trauma-informed practices, and adapting as necessary to support student success in a rapidly changing world. It is essential that we acknowledge that the pandemic, distance learning, and on-going racial violence have impacted students and families of color deeply. We cannot move forward in this school year or next without acknowledging the pain and trauma in our communities of color.

As we plan for the transition from this school year to next, our priority is to examine areas where we can strengthen our system to address the inequities of structural bias so that all students are included in opportunities for growth and success.

Planning for Next Fall

Over 2,000 Corvallis families responded to our survey about planning for the 2020-21 school year. The survey will remain open through Friday, June 5. If ODE and OHA guidelines preclude a full return to school next fall, families thus far have overwhelmingly responded that a hybrid or blended model for learning is their preference. The Educational Delivery team that is planning for next year understands that many changes will need to be made next year in order for student academic, social, and emotional learning to be meaningful and culturally relevant.

School Board Meeting and Continued Facilities Closures

The School Board will meet at 6:30 pm on June 11 to discuss the budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2020, as approved by the Corvallis School District Budget Committee. The meeting will be held virtually and will be live-streamed on the district YouTube channel.

Following the Governor’s Executive Order 20-20, schools and facilities will remain closed through June 30, 2020. This means that all buildings and athletic facilities (including district tennis courts and tracks) will remain closed until the order is lifted.

Important Milestones

• We anticipate initial guidance from the Oregon Department of Education, developed by the Oregon Health Authority, for the 2020-21 school year by the end of next week.
• Understanding that teachers need time to learn and retool for the 2020-21 school year, we are ending academic expectations for learning on June 8. Staff will be participating in planning and training to prepare for a rigorous educational experience for students next fall.
• To end the school year for elementary students and families the structure will continue to look very much the same. A strong emphasis will be placed on closing out the school year on a positive, caring note.
• From June 8 – 19, students may connect with schools by email, phone calls, chats, or turning in work.
  • Based on ODE guidance, all students will be promoted to the next grade level and take the next class/course level.
  • Grading practice guidelines were provided to teaching staff to ensure that all elementary students receive passing grades for this semester and middle/high school students who are receiving an incomplete will have support to earn a passing grade either this summer or next fall.
• For next year, we have adopted Canvas, an educational platform, that will streamline digital learning for our students in grades 6-12. A strong learning management system will allow us to make timely shifts in instruction as rules regarding physical distancing continue to change during the 2020-21 school year.

While staying true to our commitment to creating an educational system that honors, values, and empowers our most vulnerable student groups, we are committed to creating a plan for next fall that will lead to the future we want for all of our kids. As we plan for the transition from this school year to next, our priority is to examine areas where we can strengthen our system to address the structural barriers and inequalities that persist for students of color so that all students are included in opportunities for growth and success.
